Contract 05-0J9404

The responses to bidder's inquiries, unless incorporated into a formal addendem to the contract, are not a part of the contract and are provided for the bidder's convenience only. In some instances, the question and answer may represent a summary of the matters discussed rather than a word-for-word recitation. The availability or use of information provided in the responses to bidder's inquiries is not to be construed in any way as a waiver of the provisions of Section 2-1.03 of the Standard Specifications or any other provision of the contract, the plans, Standard Specifications or Special Provisions, nor to excuse the contractor from full compliance with those contract requirements. Bidders are cautioned that subsequent responses or contract addenda may affect or vary a response previously given.

Q) Plan sheet SC-2 show k-rail placed in the existing northbound lane. There are no quantities for restriping to accomadate the k-rail shift. We are assuming that the k-rail shown is an error, and is not needed. If it is needed, please clarify.

A) The k-rail will be required but there will be no striping required.

Q) On sheet X-2 (3 of 26) of the project plans both the typical cross section for sta 151+15 to 155+10 and "Detail A" show the bottom of the Type 60C barrier at subgrade of the lower side roadway rather than on top of the lower roadway per Std. Plan A76A. The dimension on "Detail A" shown as "Var 0.040-0.536" does not match the bottom of the barrier being at the low side subgrade. Based on being at the low side subgrade the smallest dimension for the offset would be 0.040 (roadway offset) + 0.210 (pavement section)for a total of 0.250. The largest dimension is at Sta 153+00 per sheet P-1 (7 of 16) which equals 0.350 (roadway offset) + 0.210 (pavement section)for a total of 0.560. If the barrier is placed on the top of the lower roadway grade as is the usual case the variation will be from 0.040 to 0.350. Also sheet C-3 (10 of 26) detailing the Type 60E barrier has the barrier placed on top of finished pavement per Section A-A. The Type 60 barrier is placed on top of a concrete pad at finish grade. Please clarify if Caltrans really wants the bottom of the Type 60C barrier at the subgrade of the lower roadway and if it does please name it Type 60C Modified. The roadway grading and paving will be more complicated if the Type 60C barrier bottom is at subgrade.

A) No, the intent is not to place the Type 60 C barrier on the subgrade of the lower roadway.

Q) Detail "A", on X-2 shows the bottom of CB60C on subgrade, not finish grade as shown in the Standard Plans. The Barrier is neither on an Aggregate Base nor AC pad, as specified in the Standards. Is it the intent of the designer to modify the CB60C, as shown , or build the standard section, continuing the roadway structural section beneath the barrier?

A) Bid in accordance with the contract plans as shown.
