Bus/Carpool Lanes Scheduled to ease congestion
SACRAMENTO – Caltrans announced today the launch of a new public website for the Capital City Freeway project scheduled to begin in 2023. The work will concentrate on three miles of State Highway 51 also known as the Cap City Corridor or Business 80 from J Street to north of Arden Way.
In 2016, the Capital City Freeway experienced more than 2.05 million annual hours of delay at a $27.5 million cost to motorists and had five of the region’s top 10 bottlenecks. As the region continues to grow, conditions in the corridor are expected to worsen by the year 2035.
The proposed $575 million project calls for widening about a three-mile stretch of highway to accommodate the extension of bus/carpool lanes in both directions, constructing auxiliary lanes and building a new Class I bike path over the American River.
