Southbound SR-163 and Connectors Closed Nights Beginning Tuesday
SAN DIEGO –Caltrans advises motorists that crews will close southbound State Route 163 (SR-163) from Interstate 8 (I-8) to the Cabrillo Bridge, also known as the Laurel Street Overcrossing, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights from 10 until 5 the next morning. The closures are needed to place falsework on the Cabrillo Bridge over SR-163.
The closures include the westbound and eastbound I-8 connector ramps to southbound SR-163 as well as the following ramps: Robinson Avenue on-ramp, Washington Street on- and off-ramps, and the University Avenue off-ramp.
Signs will be placed directing motorists traveling southbound SR-163 to take the westbound I-8 connector onto the southbound I-5 on-ramp to access northbound SR-163.
Caltrans and the City of San Diego are partners for the rehabilitation and seismic retrofit of the Cabrillo Bridge (Laurel Street Overcrossing) over SR-163. Laurel Street is the bridge road deck that leads into the west side of Balboa Park from 6th Avenue. It was closed to vehicles for four months beginning Jan. 2. Pedestrians and bicyclists walking their bicycles will continue to have access across the bridge.
Park museums and vendors will remain open to the public during the construction period.
