Ramp Meters Scheduled For Activation Along Westbound State Route 78

SAN DIEGO – Caltrans announced today that afternoon ramp metering is coming to westbound State Route 78.

The activation of the ramp meters will take place in phases, with the first starting June 12 at the Sycamore Avenue, Rancho Santa Fe Road and Las Posas Road on-ramps to westbound SR-78.

The second phase will start June 19 for both San Marcos Boulevard and Twin Oaks Valley Road and the final phase on June 26 for Barham Drive/Woodland Parkway and Nordahl Road.  The ramp meters at these locations will be in operation from 3-7 p.m.

“Ramp meters are traffic signals at the end of the on-ramp to restrict large volumes of vehicles from entering the freeway all at once and pushing it past its designed capacity,” said Caltrans spokesperson Cathryne Bruce-Johnson.  “The result is a short delay at the ramp meter in exchange for reduced traffic congestion and better commute times.”

Motorists can learn more about ramp meters at the Caltrans web page: dot.ca.gov/dist11.  Click on Ramp Meter Brochure on the left under Quick Links.
