This event will feature a memorial display of 178 orange highway cones to signify each of the Caltrans workers killed statewide since 1924. This year’s ceremony will include 15 cones signifying Caltrans employees who lost their lives while working along highways in San Diego and Imperial counties. Featured speakers include Caltrans District Director Laurie Berman, Caltrans Deputy District Director of Construction Mike McManus, Caltrans District Division Chief of Maintenance Everett Townsend, California Highway Patrol Border Division Chief Jim Abele, and Associated General Contractors San Diego President Jeff Turner. The event will also feature the annual employee “Reading of the Names.”
Highway workers who have been involved in close calls on the highways and a Spanish-speaking spokesperson will be available for interviews. Refreshments will be provided by the California Transportation Foundation and the Caltrans District 11 Employees Committee.
