I-8/Rest Areas Dedicated Friday In Honor Of Highway Maintenance Worker Jaime Obeso

EL CENTRO, Imperial County – The family of fallen California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) Highway Maintenance Leadworker Jaime Obeso will conduct a ceremony this Friday morning to dedicate a portion of Interstate 8 and the nearby Sunbeam rest areas in his honor.

The ceremony will take place at the eastbound Interstate 8 Sunbeam Rest Area, starting at 7 a.m. Senator Juan Vargas is expected to be the featured speaker at the event, along with family members and co-workers. Highway signs will be unveiled as part of the event.

Sen. Vargas authored Senate Concurrent Resolution 52 naming a portion of I-8 and the rest areas in honor of Mr. Obeso, who was born and raised in El Centro. Funding for the memorial signs and installation was provided by family fund-raising efforts and private contributors.

Mr. Obeso, 53, suffered fatal injuries on June 7, 2011 when a suspected impaired driver veered into his highway work zone along I-8.
