Caltrans Highway Workers Memorial Day in Imperial CountyWHO:
Officials from the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

State highway workers from the region will gather to pay tribute to the men and women who have died in the line of duty as part of the 22nd Annual California Highway Workers Memorial Day.

OPPORTUNITY
One hundred and seventy-eight orange highway cones will be on display, each representing the workers who have died in the line of duty since 1924, including three who were killed last summer -- Stephen Palmer Sr., Jaime Obeso and Richard Gonzalez. Mr. Obeso, 53, of Imperial was working a stretch of Interstate 8 last June when he was killed by a suspected impaired driver. The event will feature speakers Caltrans District Director Laurie Berman, Statewide Caltrans Division Chief of Maintenance Tony Tavares and CHP Captain Ben Nocon. Highway workers who have been involved in close calls on the highways and Spanish-speaking spokesperson will be available for interviews.
