SR-111 Closed On East Side Of Salton Sea For Four Days in Early December
EL CENTRO–A portion of State Route 111 (SR-111) on the east side of the Salton Sea will be closed for four days in early December as highway workers replace an aged bridge and upgrade a drainage system, according to Caltrans.
SR-111 will be closed between the communities of Niland in the south to Mecca in the north on Friday, Dec. 7 at 7 a.m. through Tuesday, Dec. 11 at 7 a.m. Traffic will be detoured north and south on the west side of the Salton Sea along SR-86. Motorists will need to allow extra time for the detour.
"We understand the impacts of this closure and that is why we are going out early with this information through the media, and with alerts on highway message signs," said Caltrans Media Relations Officer Hayden Manning. "The plan is to reach as many drivers as we can in the impacted communities, commercial transportation, recreation and tourism."
The estimated $1 million bridge replacement/drainage project began in October by building a pair of large box culverts beneath the bridge without impacts to traffic. The four-day closure will allow the demolition and removal of the existing 65-year-old bridge, and then constructing the highway over the top of the double box culverts.
Manning said the lengthily closure is necessary since this stretch of highway is without easily-accessible parallel roads for timely detours around the construction site.
