Major Freeway Closures Planned Near Border
SAN DIEGO – The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) has planned a major freeway closure on southbound Interstate 5 in San Ysidro. The freeway closures will begin just south of Camino De La Plaza starting Tuesday night for three consecutive nights from 10 p.m. to 10 a.m., according to the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans).
Construction crews for the GSA will begin by closing the three far right lanes for approximately six hours then re-opening these lanes and closing the three far left lanes for an additional six hours. There will be three lanes open at all times during these periods of work.
Crews will be re-striping lanes and installing traffic calming measures to accommodate a major traffic switch to the El Chaparral facility. The crossing is scheduled to open in early November. Fixed and portable electronic message signs will alert motorists of the approaching closure. Traffic delays are expected.
