Traffic Delays Expected on Interstate 15

SAN DIEGO – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is advising motorists to expect long delays during this afternoon’s commute on Interstate 15, between State Route 163 and SR-78.

The expected delays are due to the closure of two lanes on southbound I-15 in the vicinity of the Carroll Canyon Road overpass.  The closure is necessary for crews to work on a portion of the bridge falsework under construction, which was struck earlier today by a truck carrying an oversized load.

The I-15 Express Lanes that normally accommodate northbound traffic in the afternoon will be reversed to instead accommodate southbound traffic.  This will likely create traffic congestion on the freeway’s northbound main lanes as well.

“If you don’t live along the I-15 corridor through this area, then you should try to avoid it at all costs this afternoon,” said Caltrans spokesman Edward Cartagena.  “If it’s a viable option for you, try instead to take Interstate 805 or I-5.”

Caltrans stresses that the closure of the two lanes and the overpass falsework does not present any danger to motorists; however, repairs are needed before truck traffic is permitted under that portion of the overpass.
