Change in Eastbound SR-78 Metering Times Coming To San Marcos and Vista
SAN DIEGO – The operation of ramp meters at ten locations along eastbound State Route 78 (SR-78) will be extended by one hour later this month, according the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans). Traffic experts expect freeway traffic congestion to ease during commute hours as a result in the change in operation times. The modification is also in anticipation of the additional traffic congestion expected from the upcoming construction projects in the area.
The ramp meters will be activated one hour earlier starting at 2 -7p.m. The first phase is within the city of San Marcos beginning Tuesday, Sept. 21 at the six following on-ramps.
Barham Drive/Woodland Parkway;
Twin Oaks Valley Road;
San Marcos Boulevard;
Las Posas Road/Grand Avenue
and Rancho Santa Fe Road
The second phase is within the city of Vista on Tuesday, Sept. 28 at the following four on-ramps.
Mar Vista Drive;
Escondido Avenue/Sunset Drive;
and Vista Village Drive.
Advanced warning signs will be placed at the busiest on-ramps prior to activation to alert motorists of the new operation time.
The ramp meters allow vehicles to enter the freeway dependent on current traffic conditions. Motorists are delayed for a brief time at the meter, but studies show that freeway speeds, overall travel times and highway safety are improved.
