Confusion Hill Realignment - Introduction

Aerial photo of the Confusion Hill slide February 2006

This project is relocating approximately 1.5 miles of Route 101, to the west via two bridges, in order to avoid the massive slide area.

A large, ancient rock slide complex extends from the South Fork Eel River to more than 1,000 feet above, enveloping the current highway, 140 feet above the river. Numerous closures during the winter of 2005/2006 were all due to continued slide activity.

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has approved Emergency Relief funding to relocate Route 101 at Confusion Hill.
