Welcome to Caltrans District 1

Caltrans, or the California Department of Transportation, is headquartered in Sacramento, California. Responsible for many facets of transportation, we seek to improve transportation opportunities on California's scenic North Coast. We do this in partnership with state and local governmental agencies, as well as local transportation planning agencies that are chartered throughout the District.
District 1 headquarters office is located in the city of Eureka, Humboldt County, California. The District Director is Charles Fielder. Many remote offices for both construction and maintenance activities are located throughout the District, which includes the counties of Del Norte, Humboldt, Lake, and Mendocino.
The North Coast depends on our highway infrastructure for both commerce and tourism. Route 101, traversing north to south through the heart of the District, has often been characterized as the "lifeline of the North Coast." Maintaining that route, and our highway system generally, in terrain that varies from mountainous to valley profiles, and from lake settings to coastline can be very challenging, especially in those areas where rainfall amounts are high.
This web site is intended to give the viewer an opportunity to learn about Caltrans District 1, the activities we perform as we carry out our mission, and the impacts that such activities may have on the traveling public. In addition, we provide general information about the North Coast area, including points of interest, links to state and national parks, and various local commercial and governmental references.
Please feel free to send comments regarding this web site to our webmaster. Questions, comments, or suggestions pertaining to construction activities or travel throughout the District can be directed to our Public Information Office
