Deputy District Director of Planning
Gary Slater was appointed as District 7 Deputy District Director for the Division of Transportation Planning and Local Assistance in May 2015. Mr. Slater works with regional partners, elected officials, stakeholders and the public to articulate the vision of transportation while laying the groundwork for project development and guiding transportation investments. The Division includes the offices of System & Regional Planning, Local Assistance, Intergovernmental Review & Community Based Planning, and Project & Special Studies.
Mr. Slater has been with the Department for 29 years with experience in the divisions of Design, Construction, Planning, and Traffic Operations.
Previously, he worked on project approval and implementation of the I-405 Express Lanes for District 12 (Orange County) Traffic Operations; lead development of Project Studies, Project Initiation Documents and Major Investment Studies; and participated on the Statewide Quality Management Team to implement the PSR-PDS document improvements, significantly shortening planning time and effort to program new projects. He gained invaluable experience working as Deputy District Director for Planning and Local Assistance in District 8 (San Bernardino) from December 2013 until May 2014.
He began his leadership work in the Office of Design, delivering projects along the I-5 corridor using various project delivery methods with both consultant oversight and Caltrans staff.
Mr. Slater has been a Senior Transportation Engineer since 1993. He and his wife, Carolyn, have been married for 30 years, and they have two children, Daniel and Jessica. His hobbies include home remodeling, concerts and theater, fishing, cooking, and travel. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from California State University, Northridge.
