Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS)

Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) are defined as “the application of advanced sensor, computer, electronics, and communication technologies and management strategies.” This is an integrated manner to improve safety and efficiency of the surface transportation system. Examples of ITS include ramp metering, real-time traveler information systems, and loop detectors.

The 2007 Central Coast ITS Implementation Plan and 2010 Caltrans District 5 Traffic Management Branch Deployment Status update provides the roadmap, the implementation schedule, and integrated framework to connect ITS projects together in
Caltrans District 5.
