SR-111 Connectors To Eastbound I-8 Close Longterm Tuesday
SAN DIEGO——Caltrans construction crews will close the northbound and southbound State Route 111 (SR-111) connectors to eastbound Interstate 8 (I-8) beginning Tuesday afternoon to continue work on Segment 4 of the I-8 Update Project in Imperial County. Motorists will be detoured around the closure via westbound I-8, to Dogwood Road south to the eastbound I-8 on-ramp.
On Wednesday night, crews will close a one-mile portion of eastbound I-8 to continue construction work on the eastbound side of the highway. Eastbound I-8 traffic will be reconfigured to one lane and shifted to the westbound lanes. During the closure, traffic on eastbound I-8 will be detoured just west of the SR-111 interchange onto westbound I-8 and then back to eastbound I-8 just east of the interchange. Motorists traveling eastbound I-8 will continue to have access to northbound and southbound SR-111.
The closures, detours, and lane reductions are anticipated to be in place for approximately six months with the majority of the road work being conducted during the day. Construction impacts include slower traffic flow and delays during peak travel times, particularly on Fridays from 3-7 p.m.
I-8 will continue to be reduced to one lane in each direction on a five-mile section from approximately 0.5 mile west of SR-111 to 0.5 mile east of Barbara Worth Drive. Eastbound and westbound traffic will also continue to be reduced to one lane from just west of Ogilby Road to just west of State Route 186 (SR-186).
The I-8 Update Project is a major pavement rehabilitation project consisting of five segments that will construct Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement (CRCP) along 48 miles on I-8 in Imperial County and will result in a long-lasting superior roadway, capable of withstanding the heaviest traffic loads. Construction began in 2016 and will be completed by 2019. Segments 1 and 2 started construction in 2016 and achieved substantial completion six months ahead of schedule in summer of 2017. Segment 3 ending at the California/Arizona border is anticipated to be completed by the end of 2017.
Segments 4 and 5 broke ground in summer of 2017. Segment 4 is approximately 15 miles and divided into two smaller sections, the first section beginning just west of SR-111 to just west of Anderholt Road and the second section beginning half a mile east of East Highline Canal Bridge to just west of the junction SR-98/I-8 separation. Segment 5 is approximately seven miles beginning just west of Ogilby Road to just west of SR-186.For project information, visit www.dot.ca.gov/d11/projects/update8/.
