Caltrans Statewide Litter Pickup Day on Thursday

SAN DIEGO—Local Caltrans Maintenance crews and Adopt-A-Highway Program volunteers will join in Statewide Litter Pickup Day on Thursday to remove litter from the California transportation system and call attention to everyone’s role to Keep California Beautiful.

“Here in District 11,covering San Diego and Imperial counties, we spend more than $5.3 million and remove more than 22,000 cubic yards of litter a year,” said Caltrans District Director Laurie Berman. “That’s equivalent to more than six Olympic-sized swimming pools heaped with trash.”

Caltrans has these reminders about how everyone can help keep our roadways, bikeways and walkways litter-free:

  • Put litter where it belongs, in the trash can or recycle bin.
  • Keep a trash bag in the car to dispose litter to keep trash from flying out of an open window.
  • Make sure to properly secure large items before driving.

Another way the public can help is by participating in Caltrans’ Adopt-A-Highway Program. To become a volunteer or support the program through a paid sponsorship, call 1-866-ADOPT-A-HWY, or go to http://adopt-a-highway.dot.ca.gov.
