Q1)  Is each area to be a different stage of constructions for a total of 4? Because it doesn’t clarify how many stages. The plans it says project may need to be split into stages to allow access the project has 4 sections is each section supposed to be a stage or do I just do half the job in one stage and the other half next for total of 2 stages?

A1)  The project site is an active Caltrans Maintenance yard with different types of maintenance activities occurring throughout the day and throughout the year. Note 3 (sheet X-1) informs the contractor that construction staging will be required to ensure the facility remains functional.

It will responsibility of the Contractor to coordinate construction activities with the Resident Engineer and the Caltrans Maintenance Superintendent so that your work can be performed efficiently and maintain the essential functions of the Maintenance Facility. The hatching represents the work involved in the contract, and the distinct areas of the facilities operations. Combining stages will be allowed if your activities do not impact the facilities operations and approval is granted by the Department.

Q2)  Can the .35’ of hot mix asphalt be laid in one lift?

A2)  Attention is directed to 39-2.01C(15)(b), “Method Compaction” of the Standard Specifications. “The compacted lift thickness must not exceed 0.25 foot.”

Q3)  Will a grinder cut be enough to satisfy the “Saw Cut” requirement as shown on X-1?

A3)  No, please place your bid in accordance with the contract bid documents.

Q4)  Do we need the pave the same day we cold plane?

A4)  Attention is directed to section 39-3.04A of the contract bid Special Provisions (sheet 17). “ ... schedule cold planing activities such that not more than 24 hours has elapsed between the time the pavement is cold planed and the time the HMA is placed ...”
