8-Hour Full Highway Closures Extended For Testing Of State Route 4/Old River Bridge

Additional Overnight Full Closures Scheduled On March 28 & 29, 2024, From 8:00 P.M. Until 4:00 A.M. – Detour Required

San Joaquin County – Caltrans will continue to perform 8-hour, overnight full highway closures for the safety of workers and motorists for testing operations of the State Route 4 Old River Bridge, located at the San Joaquin/Contra Costa County line, east of Discovery Bay. This testing is required to ensure proper bridge opening/closing functions as completion nears for the bridge preventative maintenance and rehabilitation project that will make necessary upgrades and repairs of the Old River Bridge,

Overnight closures will continue beginning at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 28, until 4:00 a.m. on Friday, March 29, and from 8:00 p.m. on Friday, March 29, until 4:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 30, 2024. During these closures, the following detour will be required;

State Route 4 Detour Information:

  • Westbound SR-4 travelers: The detour begins at the Tracy Boulevard intersection; south on Tracy Blvd; west on I-205; north on Mountain House Parkway; northwest on Byron Road to SR-4.
  • Eastbound SR-4 travelers: The detour begins at the Byron Road intersection; southeast on Byron Road; south on Mountain House Parkway; east on I-205; north on Tracy Blvd to SR-4.

 

Caltrans will utilize flaggers, as well as overhead and portable changeable message signs, alerting motorists of the detour and potential delays which are expected to be approximately 30 minutes.

Overnight, one-way traffic control will also be required at the SR-4 Old River Bridge beginning Monday, April 1, through Friday, April 5, 2024, from 8:00 p.m. until 4:00 a.m.

This project is required to upgrade existing mechanical and electrical components and to implement structural repairs to increase the reliability and serviceability of this 100-year-old swing span bridge.

Work will include repairing or replacing equipment that operates the movable portion of the bridge, replacing the electrical power supply to the bridge by installing a new cable in the river bottom, and adding a new control board and associated equipment to the control house above the traveled way of SR-4 on the bridge structure.
