Why did we create the Caltrans Improvement Project?
We wanted an honest assessment of Caltrans because leadership is committed to modernizing the department and improving transportation for all Californians.
Where will Caltrans go from here?
We have adopted a new Mission, Vision and Goals, which is a critical step toward aligning state transportation planning and policy goals and better serving all Californians.
What are the next steps Caltrans will take?
Our focus will be on improved department performance, employee accountability and communications.
Caltrans will finalize its upcoming strategic plan with its goals, objectives and performance measures.
Performance measures will be analyzed and reviewed for success and improvement by executive leadership.
Caltrans will report results to the public through the Mile Marker.
What are some ways Caltrans going to change?
We will focuses on a "fix-it-first strategy," which emphasizes maintaining our existing transportation infrastructure.
Through leadership and outreach we will integrate our transportation system to include state, local and regional assets.
We are creating better partnerships with our local and regional partners.
What can I do to help?
Because change doesn't happen by just talking about it, we need every employee to take action to support these changes.

Why haven't I heard much about the Caltrans Improvement Project?
The original report was shared in 2013 and has been posted on our website. Currently, the Director and Secretary of Transportation are traveling to each of the Caltrans Districts to attend an all hands meeting and share the new strategic direction with employees.
What has been accomplished to date?
Developed a new Mission, Vision and Goals, which emphasizes the importance of a safe, sustainable, integrated, and efficient transportation system to enhance California's economy and livability.
Created an Office of Enterprise Risk Management, which spearheaded a new 24-hour ethics helpline and a website for employees to report possible fraud, waste, abuse of department assets, illegal or unethical behavior.
Published two issues of the Mile Marker, a performance driven report, to assess objectively the department's progress and where we need to improve.
Endorsed the National Association of City Transportation Officials' (NACTO) guidelines that include innovations such as buffered bike lanes and improved pedestrian walkways.
Released the new Employee Handbook and Supervisors and Managers Handbooks

Is there a Final Report or Update coming soon?
Yes, the Director plans on sending the final report and update on actions to date to all staff by the end of January.
