Electrical Substation Upgrades Ongoing on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge; WB/EB Lanes and Access to Bike Lane Could be Impacted

Contra Costa County, Marin County - Caltrans has started upgrading four electrical substations on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge between Contra Costa and Marin counties.

The project began in Spring 2024 and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2025.

Motorists traveling on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge should reduce their speeds as the work will be happening year-round.

Lane reductions and bike lane closures are expected due to the project.

Week of May 13, 2024:

  • Eastbound I-580 at Richmond San Rafael Bridge (lower deck) the far-left lane will be closed from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Monday, May 13.
  • Eastbound I-580 at Richmond San Rafael Bridge (lower deck) the far-right lane will be closed from 5 a.m. until 1 p.m. from Tuesday, May 14 until Thursday May 16.

In March 2024, the paint project on the lower deck structure of the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge was completed.
