NEW HIGHWAY 108 EAST SONORA BYPASS OPENS EIGHT MONTHS AHEAD OF SCHEDULE

TUOLUMNE COUNTY –Tuolumne County motorists started driving on the new section of the East Sonora Bypass eight months sooner than expected today.

Caltrans and the Tuolumne County Transportation Council (TCTC) finished the safety project eight months ahead of schedule.

“Caltrans’ goal is to deliver quality projects on time so we couldn’t be more pleased to open the new section of the bypass early,” said Caltrans Director Malcolm Dougherty.  “The new expressway will be safer and save motorists time while reducing fuel costs by eliminating the need to stop at Peaceful Oak Road.”

As part of Stage II of the $54 million project, Caltrans constructed a two-lane expressway on a new alignment from Peaceful Oak Road to Via Este Road.  It was scheduled for completion on June 30, 2014 but a dry winter allowed the contractor to make the road available for motorists sooner.

The new configuration has fewer curves – making the highway safer for the more than 20,000 motorists who use this roadway daily.

The project also includes a new interchange at Peaceful Oak Road; a new bridge at Mono Way; and a new frontage road connecting Highway 108 with Seaborn Road and Waif Road.

In 2006, California voters approved Proposition 1B, investing $19.9 billion in roads, bridges, ports and transit. This bond contributed $15 million toward the East Sonora Bypass. In total, nearly $17 billion in Proposition 1B funds have been put to work statewide for transportation purposes.

Caltrans finished the first phase of the East Sonora Bypass, from the Sanguinetti Overhead to just west of Peaceful Oak Road, in 2002.

This year, Caltrans has delivered several projects ahead of schedule. In February, Caltrans, the Bay Area Toll Authority, and the California Transportation Commission finished the seismic retrofit of the Dumbarton Bridge in the San Francisco Bay Area $30 million under budget and months ahead of schedule. In August, it opened the Colton Crossing rail overpass in Southern California eight months early and for more than $100 million less than the original $200 million price tag.
